Please enjoy the experience of “Julie and the Warlord,” written by B.J. Novak in One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories. (Mr. Novak is a writer and actor, and he is a graduate of Harvard University with a degree in English and Spanish Literature.) It should only take about 15 minutes to read.

Julie and the Warlord

After you have responded to the question of whether Julie should “do it” in a blog, (i.e., YOU MUST READ AND ANSWER THE DISCUSSION QUESTION AT THE END OF THE STORY TO KNOW WHAT “DO IT” IS), please take the Poll: “Yes,” “No,” or “Not sure.”

That’s it. Remember: You will be in a cyber classroom with professionals and students from all over the country discussing this story with you.

Enjoy 🙂

It will help the students open their minds and really think about things that is going on in the world today.

  2. Deborah Winston Says:

Wow, I cannot even imagine a blind date occurring like this. This is why you never drink to the point where your judgment is impaired and it clearly is for Julie. After having learned what a warlord is and what he does, and the fact that he so matter of factly stated so, she should removed herself from his presence and prayed she had not revealed too much about her personal life.

Further I am a little concerned about the author of this story, does he really think so little of women that we or Julie would even consider having sex with this man. Julie does appear to have been written as a complete airhead. Am I out of touch, are young people really this foolish? Am I making an assumption that Julie is young?

But I found it ironic that his entire philosophy can be summed up like the flourless cake, he does not care how it becomes chocolate cake, who cares what’s in it, it is cake. He brings down governments or socio-economic structures by any means necessary, it does not matter how his brand of mayhem is accomplished, it is war. How can we criticize i,t war is brutal and ugly and hard to stomach. We ignore the reality of what goes on around us from our own personal ivory towers.

  3. Latoria Crump Says:

Julie was very flirtatious verbally and physically in this story. She made physical contact initially by “stroke-poking the side of his face with her fingers”. The Warlord also made it clear that during his down time he travels, “meet you, and stuff like that”. That was his first time meeting Julie so he could be referring to women in her line of work. Therefore, I believe that Julie is a call girl. With that in mind her job is to satisfy her client. What bothers me about this client is that his occupation causes him to be violent. He stated that “we bribe, kidnap, indoctrinate, torture, and kill”. What if Julie refuses to give him a certain “type of service”, will he understand or become violent? He has a driver which means she will be leaving without her own transportation and she is intoxicated. Julie should not “fuck” the warlord under any circumstances.

  4. Trunette Lewis Says:

No she shouldn’t……. We as women have to be stronger instead of weakness we got to feel better than that don’t fall for everything a man tell us. Get to know the person first as time go by you will know if a man interesting in you or not.

    • Nisha H. Says:

You’re 100% sure about that, but how would you know that? I just want to know because I’m kind of in a predicament where I believe he his but my thoughts are telling me he’s not.

  5. Kurt V. Justice Says:

    Very interesting read.

Julie clearly is intrigued by the conversation and profession of the warlord, although she initially started off wanting to engage in an intellectual debate. But, as the conversation progressed, personal values and morals were no longer a factor.

The warlord feeds off the weak and prefers an environment where he’s in full control. Hence feeding Julie drinks to the point where she became inebriated. Unfortunately, Julie is superficial and finds attraction in men with power and money.

Julie should have excused herself immediately after learning of his profession. Allowing the warlord to divulge specific details makes Julie a liability.

  6. Kurt V. Justice Says:

Also want to point out the fact although Julie and the warlord lived in opposing worlds, the two actually shared a somethings in common.

Both were critical of the term “flourless” when after all it is a dessert. Why market a flourless chocolate cake as a healthy option (actually agree). Also implied there was a conspiracy amongst restaurants because they no longer brought you the dessert menu.

Then there was the conversation about Twitter and how they both had accounts but hadn’t really adopted it. The two did however connect online through some form of social media or an online data service, as oppose to more traditional styles of dating. Neither seem interested in a longterm commitment.

  7. Anthony Says:

This was a surprising question. What I find more intriguing is that she spent that much time discussing his background instaed of excusing herself and never returning. From what I read, she never doubted if he was joking, but took his words to be truthful. In any case she seemed to really be attracted to him, which also seemed surprising, considering it appeared that they met online or through a dating service of some sort.

    • Jay Hopkins Says:

Do you think she is really attracted to him or is it maybe the power which he says he has?

      • Anthony Says:

That’s the attraction I’m speaking of. I don’t recall anything mentioned about physical attraction, although I would assume that there was that also considering they meet online or through some type of dating service.

  8. Jay Hopkins Says:

What I gather is that even though this is a first date between Julie and the warlord, they both use whatever method they met with rather frequently to meet members of the opposite sex. In my opinion the method they used (I assume a dating site on the net) was used for convenience and ease. There was flirtation going on by both parties, Julie acting kind of innocent and the warlord acting as the take control kind of person. I think the warlord is a little more experienced with meeting as they met, he says things that will make Julie have to question him about his occupation and he can feed her what he thinks will be interesting to her. Every now and then they lighten the conversation by talking about Twitter and the flourless cake but it inevitable goes back to his occupation. How his occupation would truly interest a woman I have no idea, but she seems intrigued and wants to know more. I can’t tell if she is really interested in him or just wants to know more about his lifestyle. If what he is telling Julie is true, she is putting herself in a perilous situation, especially since rape and killing are mentioned more than she is used to hearing and she is drinking quite heavily.
The outcome does not feel positive to me.

    • Kurt V. Justice Says:

Interesting that you raise the question if the warlord is actually telling the truth and finds opportunities to feed Julie information he thinks will peak her interest.

Let’s stay with this theory for a while and re-examine how they presumingly met via an online dating service.

If I recall correctly, the conversation began with Julie asking what is a warlord? So, it is very possible Julie only agreed to the date because of his profession.

Is he actually telling the truth or created a fictitious character to meet women? We here all the time how people misrepresent themselves when using online dating services. Is this the case here?

However, what if the warlord is indeed the person he claims he is? What if Julie is not the naive person we’ve all come to know in the story? Remember, the warlord did probe by asking Julie had she read the story on Twitter about the warlord on Congo. Why would someone ask this question unless they had a good reason? Was he looking for a reaction or tone in Julie’s voice to see if her response was truthful?

What if the date isn’t actually a date but rather an undercover operation or rival looking to take control of the warlord’s territory. Is the warlord being manipulated by Julie? Julie’s flirtatiousness and tipsy disposition could all be an act to get the warlord alone in a room to arrest or execute.

Does this new theory change your answer to the writer’s question?

      • Jay Hopkins Says:

I agree that there are many variables that we can assume from this excerpt. Julie is definitely not an innocent here. Once she finds out that the warlord kills, rapes and overthrows leadership when the opportunity presents itself and she does not leave does say something about her. She either was looking for this type of dangerous relationship (whether it be one night or longer), loves living dangerously, or she may have another unknown motive. The warlord from his line of work preys on people, it’s part of his job as a warlord. He has to read signs, people, and know when to act and if the timing is right to act.
I’m not so worried about the Twitter comments, as we all know, just because it was Tweeted does not make it necessarily fact. If a subject is studied more in depth than the next person then the person who did the studying can sound very knowledgeable on the subject.
It is very possible that both Julie and the warlord have underlying motives here. She does show nerve that the average person would not show, having multiple drinks and openly flirting with someone who says that they do the types of things he does for a living. It’s kind of like they are testing each other. I’ll assume that the warlord is who and what he says he is. I just threw the “he may not be who he says he is” for arguments sake :-). That makes Julie the more mysterious of the two because we actually know very little about her.
In response to the question, keeping in line with the story, I’ll keep my answer the same because of all of the unknown variables. I don’t know if she should sleep with him or not. On a personal level I don’t think she should sleep with him though.

  9. SA Justice Says:

I find it interesting that the author Malcolm Gladwell is mentioned in this story. He is an author that causes society to become introspective in their beliefs, thoughts and values…to see the world using another type of lens to understand social epidemics. In this case, we are shown the contrast between Julie and the Warlord by way of two stores, H&M and Anthropologie. H&M is a retail store that caters to both men and women where Julie purchased her top, whereas Anthropologie caters to women and the home (family)—the store the Warlord mentioned. However, the stores relay to us that Julie is young, carefree and naïve whereas the Warlord is focused on families in other words to weaken countries by destroy families and how is that done? by raping the women (mothers), killing the men (fathers), separating the children from their families and controlling them with fear to become a new breed of soldiers.

Yes, it sounds like they met via an online dating service, but what has happened is another type of social epidemic called catfishing. Lying, pretending to be someone that you are not to bait you into a relationship, fall in love and do whatever as we saw with Manti T’eo. In this case Joseph Kony, the Warlord of this story (we can only assume since Congo was mentioned) is being catfished by Julie because her role in the story is too simple, dumbed-down and over the top to be anything other than that. Research has already been done by whatever country’s military regime on his likes/dislikes, hot buttons and fetishes for Julie to play the role perfectly. In the end, Julie will not have sex with the Warlord, but will let him believe he will have his way with her until the point of military execution. We are at the tipping point of this social epidemic (the moment when the virus reaches critical mass and begins to spread at a much higher rate) with the actions and social oppression of this Warlord…a change is gonna come.

  10. TheBaileyBrand Says:

Just FYI – This American Life ran an audio of this short, with actors playing the parts of Julie and the warlord. Since I HEARD the story first, I may have a skewed opinion – which is also an interesting variable, right?

  11. Erin J Says:

Julie should not “do it,” she is tipsy after drinking four cocktails and I do not believe she can effectively think about ALL they talked about. From the very beginning of the whole Warlord conversation she doesn’t hear him say that he is a warlord.. She asks if he is a landlord, really? That tells me she is drunk. They met online which is completely fine but I think it is a mistake to drink that much on a first date with someone you do not know.

I don’t think she took anything he said seriously, it says he went on and on talking about rape and limbs. If I were in her shoes my mouth would hit the floor and I would be disgusted.

I think it’s important to notice that they both share commonalities, they both used the dating website and twitter. It is important to remember that he is a human and he deserves the right to his own opinion and beliefs. I just don’t agree with raping and killing to see the results you want.

  12. lehia Says:

I’m honestly not sure if Julie should have sex with the warlord. To be honest, I believe every woman has been with someone that doesn’t have the ideal career path. For example, if a woman meets a man that treats her very well, and does everything for her but she finds out he deals drugs, should she leave him alone? I believe everyone needs love.
But in Julie’s case I don’t feel like she believes that the warlord is telling her the truth. I think she feels like it’s to outlandish to be true but the warlord is just telling the truth upfront, which is not normal on the first date but I guess he just wants everything out in the open.
So upon reviewing the article I believe that this situation takes place more times than we as individuals care to admit. Because you honestly never know a person’s past, present or future until they tell you. So you could be sleeping with a rapist, cheater, liar, a drug dealer or even a warlord and never know it.

  13. Crys S Says:

The Warlord is wrong for talking to a person with impaired judgement. She most certainly should not have sex with this man. We don’t know too much about Julie. Yet, this plays onto the innocent white woman mentality already. Sure, she shouldn’t have sex with him, he’s a thug. She shouldn’t have sex with him because he’s no good. The business he is in is very dangerous. Julie is very gullible and say she backed out of what was ensuing here. Because she was being flirty and open with him, he might take it another way.

Additionally, whenever he speaks about his lifestyle, she seems to brush it all off. Obviously, she isn’t clear on what he’s telling her because right now, everything seems funny. The fact that he talks about rape and torture, she should have had common sense and say, ‘well, this person probably won’t have too much respect for me either. These are horrible, illegal things.”

She shouldn’t have been drinking so much on the first date. And if he is allowing her to drink so much, she should stop and evaluate that situation right then and there.

  14. Nasirudeen Abdul-Haqq Says:

Julie shouldn’t do it. She obviously has just met the Warlord after chatting in some kind of online forum. He surprisingly confessed to being a international criminal. If she leaves with him who knows what may happen to her or where she may end up. The warlord doesn’t seem to have any problem with cutting off limbs, rape or murder so I don’t think it would be a wise decision to leave with the warlord. Julie does appear to be intrigued with the warlord even after his confession because most women would end the date after hearing his confession. Maybe her life has been full of bad choices. Either way, I do not think she should do it.

  15. Sekari Allen Says:

I honestly think she shouldn’t do it. The reason i say that is because they just met each other and his job requires him to kill people i wouldn’t want to even put myself in that kind of predicament. I also think she shouldn’t because she is under the influence of alcohol and by the reading the alcohol is really taking over her actions. He seems like a nice guy and all but it’s not the best choice for them to have sex. She may never even see him again in her life. What if she gets pregnant by him then their child has to grow up knowing his/her father is a Warlord. By the looks of thing Julie might end up doing something with the Warlord though cause it seems as if everything he’s telling her isn’t a problem. Maybe she won’t regret it who knows she might just join the team and marry him.

  16. Tamira-marie Says:

I find all thoughts on the question of, “Shoud Julie perform coitus with the warlord?”, very profounding. Thus far, I believe that Julie should sleep with the warlord. If there was a list of top characters to be set up with on a blind date, psychotic, sociopath and serial killer would be amongst them and Julie hit the jackpot. Not only did she find company that would turn majority away but the sociopath is charming, eloquent, handsome and a man with many resources. Although I believe that she has chosen the worst of the worst, something that cannot be disputed is that the warlord was upfront and honest about his given profession. Honesty is a quality not everyone possesses. The warlord did this while being (I believe) sober. Julie on the other hand had more than quite a few drinks to loosen up. Why was it that she had problems with her date possibly being landlord and druglord rather than a warlord? Why did those professions gain an immediate response? Throughout this entire date, a lot of light was shed onto the warlord but Julie is still a mystery to me.

  17. jordan jones Says:

I say yes she should and to be honest I think she did at the end of the story. The man is a war lord so he is going to get what he wants when he wants it. Even if she says no he still might make her do it anyway. I do have to give the guy credit he is smooth. He took her mind off of his job and made her think about other things. he blinded her with compliments and she was also drunk so she wasnt thinking straight. Her judgment was off alot. at the end of the night i believe that she had sex with the man.

  18. Tamira-marie Says:

After critically reading the passage, I have decided to change my view on whether Julie should perform coitus with the Warlord. She should run! Like magicians, hypnotists and illusionists every move the warlord makes is calculated. On various occassions, he’d test and distract Julie (the hocus pocus) meanwhile feeding her information about his career (the actual trick) in such a way that it had me considering his point at times. His tests were to assess her attention span, shift her thoughts and reveal her willingness as a follower. I still believe that he is a sociopath. He is very calculating and charming, which is a dangerous combination. It is the warlord’s job to be able to read and control large populations. I’d go as far as to say that he subconsciously made her take all those drinks to further inhibit her judgement.

  19. Remy Simpson Says:

I feel that Julie should not do anything with the Warlord. I think that because the Warlord is a killer! Who would actually want to have something to do with that type of person. Going on that blind date, she should have been more cautious. I think that one of the reasons she took drinks was so she can loosen up, because meeting a person for the first time can be nerve-wrecking. Once the Warlord started to describe what a Warlord is, she should have automatically gotten the hint that, that is not the type of person that she needs to be around. But, since she was tipsy the alcohol was taking control of her actions. The warlord could have put her in serious danger, and Julie probably would have been okay with it because she was tipsy. Julie was being overly flirty by touching the warlord, the comments she said and the multiple drinks so she led him on. Julie never not agreed or questioned what the warlord was saying, instead she tried to change subjects. So as I was reading it, it made me think that maybe going all the way is what she wanted. Maybe Julie was actually attracted to him, and how he portrayed himself to be.In my opinion, if Julie did not consume those multiple drinks, I think she would have thought differently and she would not have been so naive.

  20. shannelle day Says:

After doing some critical thinking about ” Julie and the Warlord’, I agree she should not have sex with the warlord . First because her judegment was impaired and she is very blind side about the type of person he is. Everyone talks about the warlord occupation and how he is a killer and rapist which is another reason why she shouldnt sleep with him, but you have to look at julie’s character too she is not all what the story making her to be. For example she is very flirtatious, it shows when she started to stroke poke him on the side of his face with her finger. She shows that she very gullible, naive, young more into what type of power he holds then exactly thinking about what this man does. I believe the author contradicts both of the characters titles in the story, with the warlord he shows a little sensitive side when he was talks about how people was talking about him on twitter negative but switch it up and make him look like a monster then Julie the author paints this picture that she innocent, sweet but her actions shows different about her character. I’m all for Julie not to have sex with the warlord but what if this man not who the story making him to be and what if Julie really someone who loves bad boys because it did address that a nice would be a different approach for her. I don’t understand why the author would ever think someone would ever deal with someone like that. Is he trying to show todays dating society? It’s a lot of questions on the approach of what the author want us as the readers to believe to determine our position in this question.

  21. William B. Says:

The warlord has already shown his hand. He is used to treating women like chattel. He is obviously attempting to use Julie otherwise, he would not allow her to continue drinking. Also there is an obvious intellectual disconnect, just based on the fact that Julie is not aware of the power, political influence and position of a warlock.

  22. MarKela S. Says:

In my opinion Julie shouldn’t have sexual relations with the Warlord. I feel that she shouldn’t affiliate herself with someone who openly says that he rape, kill, bribe, and kidnap people for a living on a first date. They obviously met on a social networking site; which I don’t trust but to each is own. Julie is so fascinated with the Warlord (or maybe the power that he has) that she’s lacking the common sense to notice the things that he is saying and leave the date. The Warlord comes off as a smart powerful man, but Julie on the other hand portrays herself as a ditsy female who is lacking the ability to have an intellectual conversation. The question should Julie have sex with the Warlord? Should be switched in my opinion; I believe it should be up to the Warlord. If he’s honestly trying to date seriously he shouldn’t date Julie; I truthfully think that in the end she will end up having sex with him because her morals and values are very absent on this date.

  24. Aliyah Rankin Says:

Honestly, I believe Julie should not fuck the Warlord. Because as women we should have much more respect for themselves and have common sense to do anything like that. It is cleat that Julie isn’t in the right mindset to make any decisions such as the one she is in. As stated in the reading, “he was laughing just to be nice . . .” which means he wasn’t paying attention to Julie. That’s also one reason why she should not do it. In Julie case I don’t feel like the Warlord is being true to Julie about what he wants from her. Also, before getting that serious with someone you should get to know them a lot more. From the story I gathered that the Warlord feeds off the weak which I feel that he is doing to Julie because she has been drinking a lot. Therefore, Julie should think real hard about fucking the Warlord.

  25. jarrettpealer Says:

    Jarrett Pealer
After reading all of the details of the passage in my opinion I believe that shouldnt have sex with the warlord for three simple reasons ; His occuptation , she doesnt know him well, and for the simple fact that she is under the influence of alchohol.I know being under the influence pays a part in way you make decisions.Julie should be able to recognize the fact that her going home with is guy is not a good choice .There is also another side to this argument , the fact that he is warload he still is giving her respect that she deserves or in other words; he doesnt act as a typical warlord.Eventhough he is treating her very well , my opinion still remains the same that she shouldnt do that with him in just one meeting , because she doesnt know him well enough to take that step . It would just be a very crazy decision to have sex with him.

  26. Devon Dove (Eng 111/ShawU) Says:

Julie should not have sex with the warlord, considering the fact that she is under the influence and is not currently in her right state of mind at that moment. I was watching a movie the other day and this lady was a independent wealthy office woman and she fell for her driver after she was intoxicated one night, which she would have probably not done if she was sober because her actions showed otherwise, so when you’re under the influence you make different decisions. As William B. said which i agree with, ”there is an obvious intellectual disconnect, just based on the fact that Julie is not aware of the power, political influence and position of a warlord”. The whole point I’m getting at is that she Isn’t her right state of mind to be making big decisions as far as have intercourse with a murderer.

  27. Acacia Cadogan Says:

Julie went into this date knowing what she wanted out of it, and from the looks of it, she never strayed away from it. I believe Julie wanted to have sex with the Warlord before she even knew who he was. I believe that if a woman wants to find a partner she would not be drinking so much on a first date and doing/saying all of the forward things Julie was. Throughout the date Julie was flirtatious and cute despite the fact that the Warlord was unresponsive to her flirty remarks and gestures. When he goes into explaining his job, she was not phased at all and instead just made up responses so she wouldn’t sound like an airhead. It is made clear that Julie was not anticipating an intellectual conversation like the Warlord was trying to initiate. To my understanding, Julie did not care about any of the conversation being held, because she only wanted one thing. Some say the Warlord is dangerous, but from what I can see, the only thing monstrous about the Warlord is his occupation. Yes, Julie should “fuck” the Warlord.

  28. Dwyane Anderson Says:

No man respects a woman that does not respect themselves

  29. Jaylen Mitchell Says:

I believe Julie should not have sex with the warlord; thing is she got herself into a predicament where she made it seem that way and if she does not have sex with the warlord she could intimately be forced into sexual acts being as though he comes from a violent background of killing, torturing and kidnapping and she doesn’t have her own form of transportation. Its quite apparent that Julie is not in her right mind to make rash decisions or even to get herself out of what could very much so be in harms way.

Though I believe she should not it clearly shows how she wanted to have sex with this warlord she continues to be very flirtatious and touchy despite him not acknowledging her when he talks about his occupation and beating around the bush most of their time together.

It also bothers me a bit how the Author characterized this woman. Julie and the warlord met online and went out for drinks and automatically she is thought of as one who will “fuck” the man she just met. This story kind of shows a different outlook on what people perceive of young women in society today.

  30. Undrell Wilson Says:

After carefully reading this story I believe that Julie should have sex with the warlord. It is clear to see that she is definitely attracted to him, believes him to be a nice guy, doesn’t seem to mind his line of work, and finds him interesting. Throughout the story Julie constantly flirts with the warlord both verbally and physically. She stroke-pokes the side of his face and they both tell each other they look nice. Now some might disagree being as though they had just met each other via internet and his occupation is quite questionable. But it is not like he was dishonest about what he does for a living. he was very truthful about the fact and again she didn’t seem to mind at all. So again I don’t see anything wrong with Julie and the Warlord having sex.

  31. Larry Richardson II Says:

Honestly, I feel that Julie shouldn’t have sex with the Warlord mainly because of the baggage he carries from Africa. The way the story was so finely written, the author portrays a view of being a warlord as STRICTLY a job. For me, it’s hard to differentiate if the warlord is very serious when he explains his “job” as only a job, or if he’s just trying to sugar coat it for Julie to get into her pants. Harsh, I know. The fact that Julie is drinking away her soul and is impaired should be a signal to herself that she shouldn’t have sex with this man. Plus, she JUST him met on a networking site at that! She should really take more caution and realize what risks she’s setting herself up with. I just feel like at the end of the day she’s gonna do what she wants , but she shouldn’t.

  32. Jacqueline Fitzpatrick Says:

I don’t think Julie should do it, because although he may seem nice at this dinner the things that he is ok with doing is sicking. No human in their right mind would be ok with going into a city or village and just tormenting the people that live there for a job. The fact that she has been drinking and her thoughts are a little impaired and she’s still sitting down listening to him talk about what he does for a job is mindblowing, because common senseshould be kicking in a little once he said that he goes in and rape the women. I honestly believe that Julie doesn’t think that much because this is your first date with a man you don’t even knopw and never even met so why would you get drunk when you have no idea what his intention for this date are.

  33. Joseph Stewart Says:

She should not have sex with the Warlord. She just met this guy online. The only thing that she knows is that he is a warlord she does not what is after him. I feel that if she has sex with the warlord that he is going to kill her. She does not know what can happen on down the line. I mean it was the first date to so that is not a good move to have sex on the first date. Plus she had some drinks so she can be a little intoxicated.

  34. Remy Simpson Says:

Julie was being overly flirty by touching the warlord, the comments she said and the multiple drinks so she led him on. Julie never not agreed or questioned what the warlord was saying, instead she tried to change subjects. So as I was reading it, it made me think that maybe going all the way is what she wanted. Maybe Julie was actually attracted to him, and how he portrayed himself to be.In my opinion, if Julie did not consume those multiple drinks, I think she would have thought differently and she would not have been so naive.

I feel that Julie the cocktail freak should get it in with Warlord. At the end of the day a woman is going to know what she want from a guy and obviously going to get what they want. If she was’nt feeling the Warlord she would of left from all the information that he said to her. I think that she feels that even thou he’s all the things he mention she can’t determined that his job makes him who he is. So my answer is yes She sould fuck him. Final Answer.

Its crazy to me that things like this actually happen in real life. I honestly don’t think that it would be in julies best intrest to do it. I feel as if the situation as a whole is quite dangerous. Julie was also under the influence so she is not thinking correctly. The warlord kills people for a living. His “job” is illegal; so overall he just is not a good person. In the story the warlord is very decieving, and he doesnt even talk about himself until julie had three cocktails. I just feel as if he could be dangerous and possibly harm julie. she doesnt know enough about the warlord to even do it and what she does know about his isnt anything good. in the story it seemed as if julie wanted to do it with the warlord, but i believe that was due to the cocktails. This situation just has bad written all over it.

  37. Von Harrington Says:

I feel that Julie should not have sex with the Warlord. One reason is beacuse its the first date, she should not give it up to him the first night. She have to have some type of respect about herself you cant give it up to anybody. She hardly even know the man he can have some type of STD or HIV that she dont even know about. The second reason is beacuse what he do. The man is a Warlord he control a little part of a country. He kidnaps, rape, bride, indoctrinate, toure and last but not least he even KILLS people. Something should have popped in her head and told her that this guy is not a nice man at all. Then he tryed to make himself look sensitive and soft. If she was not so durnk on cocktails she would have seen him trying to confuse her mind and just trying get in her pants.

  38. Jonathan Stover Says:

In my opinion, I feel that Julie should not have sex with the warlord. There are many different reasons for that being my opinion. My first reason is because she is under the influence of alcohol. When you are under the influence of alcohol, it effect the way you act, think, and the decisions you make. With her having a few drinks, he could easily be taking advantage of her. Another reason for why I feel that Julie should not have sex with the warlord is because they met online. the last reason is the fact that he told her that she is a killer. With him being a killer she is putting herself in a very dangerous situation.

  39. lawrence Says:

I dont think Julie should have sex with the warlord. She may be caught up in the momment or lonely so she is just looking for somone to show her some attention. Prehaps her judgement has been clouded by the number of cocktails she has consumed. I have a feeling that Julie likes “bad boys” but i also believe that the warlord may be more she barggined for. He is being a nice person now but i believe every relationship is good in the honeymoon stage. After acquring the information at the dinner she should know that he is not a person she wants to play with or have as a friend, that can mean a lot of trouble for Julie. Having a sexual relationship with someone can mean that you want to move in to the next stage with them. it may be a nice idea now but some people tend to get really attached to there partners and have a hard time letting go. The warlord may have a issue with her knowing that personal information about him then wanting to leave after they have sexual relations. i believe it is best that Julie breaks it off with the warlord and continue to look in other places for a companion.

Julie wants is head over heels for the warlord. It is obvious she wants to have sex with him. It became apparent when she started to invade his personal space touching his face and what not. 41. Tykia Jones Says:

I think that Julie should not have sex with the warlord. There are many reasons why i say this. One reason I think that is because of the warlord occupation. Second reason is because it was only they first date. Thirdly, because Julie was too intoxicated on her first ate to be doing anything with the warlord. Julie should have been more focus and cautious on her first date. Knowing that the warlord has already told her he was a killer. That automatically tells you that he is a very dangerous man to be around. Mostly on first date people be really nervous and start drinking. I felt as Julie was really nervous and started drinking so she can loosen up to the warlord. Meanwhile, they was conversating she asked him “What is a Warlord”? His response was “They bribe, kidnap, indoctrinate, torture, and kill”. With that being said Julie should of realize that he was too dangerous for her. Since she was drunk, Julie was really out of it. Every time the warlord said something she never respond on what they was talking about for some reason she always change the subject. Everything she was saying to him her flirty comment s an all was really leading the warlord on not knowing that her life could have been in serious danger. While I was reading, I felt as if Julie really liked him. In my own words, if it want for so many drinks she would not acted so naïve.

  42. Nicholas Oden Says:

Julie being so nice and kind of tipsy she just may be falling right into the warlord trap and don’t even know to be honest. You can’t overlook what he said a warlord is that’s a huge factor. I understand Julie finds guys that are hard, tough, and with power attractive but this might be the wrong tough guy. This can be something she will regret doing and hunt her for the rest of life. Then again she might be dead or lock up being torture for an entirety. He can kidnap her for ransom, maybe fu8k her then kill her. What I’m trying say is HE’S A KILLER do know of anybody that sex with a killer? I don’t think so.

  43. Tyler Williams Says:

I believe that Julie should not have sex with the warlord. This man is insane and she knows very little about this man. She met this man over the internet and seeing him for the first time in person. Is she suppose to believe everything that he tells her? And if what he is telling her the truth, is the truth a good enough reason not have sex with the warlord? I mean this guy is a killer and murder. He has no problem with what he does or who he is. This is alot to drop on a female for the first date. Also, she was under the influence and had one too many. Her judgement on the warlord was restrained from clear thinking because of all the drinks she had. I believe that the warlord was honestly purposely trying to get her drunk by the way he seemed to have a driver set up and kept offering her another drink. But she should have some type of respect for herself and won’t have sex with the warlord. It would be a dangerous and foolish decision if chosen otherwise.

No! I don’t believe she should. This was a surprising question, but US as women today need to be very strong instead of showing our emotions quickly. Such as “you’re the prettiest woman I’ve met thus far” or “can you come to my house later? Bring some friends along.” but netherless to say, she was also flirtacious with him as well. 46. Kendal Dukes Says:

Julie and the Warlord were two adults looking to meet someone with whom they could spend some time. Both Julie and the warlord had experienced some online dating before. Julie was attracted to the warlord. She flirted with her words and her touches. Julie went so far as to finish her third drink when she felt like she was coming down from her buzz. Then she had a fourth. We may assume that her drunken behavior made her a potential victim of the warlord. What about the other viewpoint? Could she just as easily been a woman who liked a good time and drinking was just a part of how she socialized? Not every woman is looking for a “man”. We assume that Julie was too drunk to make the right choices. I believe the choice was already made in her head because it seems Julie just needed a physical need met and tonight the warlord was just that guy. So yes, she should fuck the warlord.

Julie went on a date with a stranger who happens to be a killer. I believe that Julie should have sex with him. She was being very flirtatious, which would lead any man on. Despite the fact the Warlord was very unresponsive to her flirty remarks and gestures she continued to do so throughout to the date. When the Warlord explains his job she does not fazed at all but instead wants to know more about it. We do not know what Julie does for a living. For all we know she could be the same thing. From what I see the Warlord is not dangerous, just his occupation. I feel that she should f*ck the Warlord because she sat through the whole date and does not seem scared of him.

  48. Mandasia Parks Says:

I believe julie and the warlord should have no sexual interactions. My reason for this is because the lack of information they know of one another. I dont think it is a good idea to have sex with a man after only encountering one date with them. As a lady I feel she may have some type of low morals because she over looked the fact he rape and kills as well as torture other people. Julie needs to stand up for herself and leave the encounterment she is having with the warlord. The warlord could have any motives to do anything to her after their date and continueing to drink more cocktails is not making the situation any better. The warlord is annoucing to her he basically is a dangerous man and travels when he can to meet people like her so this could be a usual thing for him, he could be travling meeting innocent and vulerable women then killing them. Julie is being very irresponsible with her drinking and she shouldve ordered a water to sober up just incase she wasent in her right mind.

  49. Safari Smith Says:

I believe that the Warlord isn’t as nice as he acting. She should not have sex with someone she has only been out with once. The fact that she met him over the internet is even worse because he may have lied about himself which a lot of people do on an online dating website. He could be more dangerous than a Warlord who likes to see people in agony and in pain. He could be out trying to hurt Julie and Julie has also been drinking so she is not in her right mind set to be having sex with him. Julie should also have more respect for her body and herself to not have sex so quickly. Julie might regret that in the morning as well and could also lead to consequences she may not be ready to deal with as in a sexual transmitted disease or pregnancy if they didn’t take the right precautions when having sex. It is just best for Julie to wait and not have sex with the warlord.

  50. Miltera Shaw Says:

Julie should not have sexual relations with the Warlord. This being their first date she should have been more cautious instead of getting tipsy. When the Warlord started talking about what he does for a living a red flag should have went up in Julies head, that the Warlord is a dangerous man that kills and rapes people for a living. The Warlord could have a STD that he could pass to Julie. Julie should have more respect for herself since should just met him. I believe that Julie should not have sex with the warlord because they just don’t seem like they match with each other, and from the text it sounds as if this is their first date. And they met online because he made a comment about her profile picture. My opinion on this is that before you begin to talk sex you should get to the know the person really well because you get attached when you’re with someone sexually, these may be only one time feelings. The warlord is a very intelligent and outspoken person, and Julie is a bit Naïve. You would picture the Warlord as a mean and heartless person who will kill you today and tomorrow act as if nothing happened, but he’s not, you can tell he has feelings, but at the end of the day that’s still his job to kill, murder and rape. You can tell that he has feelings and he actually cares about what he does. Picturing Julie you would think innocent Jewish girl who isn’t really exposed to anything, but in reality Julie is use to rough neck kinds of guys, so she’s use to bad men, and the warlord was very truthful about what he does and she didn’t pay it no mind, any other female probably would’ve left if their date told them that they killed people for a living The warlord has a very unique outlook on life and I don’t think Julie should have sex with him because they are just simply not on the same level. To me since Julie’s been drinking and she’s feeling her drinks these could be only one time feelings, she may just feel as though she wants sex from him, but since he’s the level headed one in the situation, He shouldn’t do it even if she wants to. Before partaking in sexual acts you should make sure that you know the person, you guys fully understand each other.

In my opinion, Julie shouldnt f*#k with the warlord. The reason for my opinion is, if i had a daughter i wouldnt want her to put herself in that type of relationship where she has to worry about her safety. And the fact that she had drinks and he was sober, made him look like a predator and her the prey. He could have easily took full advantage of her, thats why she shouldn’t f*#ck with the warlord.

  54. Tyreek Alexander Says:

Julie should not f*#k the warlord. He is a person who is living a really tough life and I don’t think she would be ready for that. She gets tipsy on their date and shows herself as a weak person because of the way she is carrying herself. He see that she is not a really a strong person and he feeds off her weakness. The warlord seems like the type of person that has did this multiple times and always get woman in situations like this. Julie was just confused and she was not in her right mind.

  55. Juan R. Says:

I strongly believe that Julie shouldnt have sex with the Warlord. due to the fact that met over the internet, and that she’s not that bright of a person to realzie that she’s on a date with a killer, rapist, and a torturer. Even though the Warlord personality doesnt match who he really is, thats what makes him more dangerous to females. You can never judge a book about its cover, and it seems like thats what Julie is doing. Looking at what all he has, and his appearence; Julie doesnt even here or understand most of the stuff he saying to her. i think the whole idea is just a bad one from the start.

  56. Amber Hickman Says:

I feel like julie should not have sex withthe warlord because of the background he carries. Julie is intoxicated and she probably do know know what is going around in her surroundings and it is kind of blury to her. When the warlord described hiself to her, she did not react any way different. She keeps wondering and ask questions about what he does. She is on a date with a killer and have done worser things to females and males. Even if Julies goes home with the warlord she is in deep danger because of what he does for a living. She shouldn’t have drink anything on her first date with a stranger. But you never know what this man will do to her at the end of the story, he could be a very nice man. Julie should take in consideration that he is a very dangerous man.

Reality can steal and kill the most meaningful thing in your life and walk away like nothing has taken place. Whether the population increases or decreases people are going to be executed. While his character portraits him as a gentlemen and as an individual that does not always love what he does for a living, this will not change the fact that he is the Warlord and he will stay committed to his duties. Yes he acknowledges how beautiful Julie is and what she is wearing like a gentlemen should do but does this change the fact that after the date if she fucks him or not she will be alive. In reality we all know that he will still excute her because he is the Warlord and that is his occupation. So on that note under no circumstances Julie should not fuck the Warlord! No matter if they hit it off or she leads him on if he has to take her out he will do what he has to do whether or not if he rapes or kill her poor Julie will be EXECUTED !

  58. Alphonso Boone Says:

Julie shouldn’t have sex with the warlord. I don’t think she should do it because the story says that Julie already has bad luck with men by saying “a nice guy: now that would be a real change of pace for her”. Just because the warlord is a gentleman, doesn’t erase the fact that he kills, rapes, bribes, and kidnap for a living. The warlord has a good way of talking around his job, and since Julie has had a few drinks she really isn’t aware of what he is doing. Julie already seems like she really only wants one thing from the, and that’s sex. The unknown factor is she doesn’t know what he wants from her. He is intelligent enough to not show her what he wants but still get it from her anyway. Julie may thinks she wants sex from the warlord but if he kills and rapes people, he will do the same thing to her. So Julie shouldn’t have sex with the warlord because of the risks that comes with it.

I do not believe that Julie should have sex with the warlord because for one, the text does not state how long they were talking. They could have had one or two converstaions and then decided to meet in person. They do not know much about each other and so I think that it is too early for the sexual part of the ship. Julie mentioned that the word “rape” came up into the conversation many times and so if the Warlord is the one raping people then he may have contracted some type of disease and if so he could very well give Julie the disease if they were to have sex. You could tell that Julie was interested in the warlord because she was doing sexual gestures like stroke-poking the side of his face. However, Julie had 4 cocktails in all and she may not have been in total control of her body. I don’t believe that she would be able to make decisions on her own and so therefore she should not have sex with him. Also, julies past did not come up or what she did for a living so she could have pretty much been a excort or anything else for that matter. I think it would be best for them to just be friends until they know each other enough to move to the sex level.

my personall say so to this whole situtation is that julie shouldn’t have sex with the warlord. He has pretty much to her nothing about his self as far as “government name”, age, race, etc. . The warlord has already told her how hw rap females, kill people, and also want children to become soldiers. this man has no contious at all. she doesnt know this man medical history as far as STD’s and so on he is already telling her he rape women ,who knows the AIDS or STD rates over in congo?

  62. Taheed Evans Says:

I think they shouldn’t have sex because he is a warlord that has bribed kidnapped, indoctrinated, tortured, and killed people. And even though the Warlord appears to be a good guy for Julie, she should not have sex with him because of his occupation and personal beliefs towards government/ authority. Although the Warlord is a nice guy now he may not always be that way and she also should not have sex with him because she may fall in love with him because she thinks he’s her dream man. She also shouldn’t do it because he is very violent to other people so he may be a very abusive later on in their relationship. And Julie was also drinking a lot on the date and may not want to have sex with him.

I feel like Julie shouldn’t not do it because she barely knows the guy. He has obviously been with a lot of women. Julie is clearly drunk so what makes you think he will use protection if they do have sex. He could be carrying any STD and pass it to Julie. Julie claims she heard rape in the conversation more than she ever heard so that isn’t normal. He been with numerous women and who’s to say he didn’t force it. The only reason she hasn’t bailed is because she is drunk in her judgement is impaired. If she was sober and heard him say he rapes women and kill people the date would have been over.

It amazes me that certain things like this happen in the world we live in. When I first read the article I thought it was very interesting. The question that was asked surprised me. Do I think Julie should have sex with the warlord? No I don’t think she should have sex with the warlord because she’s doesn’t know anything about him other than he’s a warlord. From reading what a warlord is he could be very dangerous and the job that he does is illegal. The little that she does know about him isn’t good. Also it was their first date; she shouldn’t be giving him anything on the first night.

  68. Tasia Marsh Says:

I feel that Julie should not sleep with the warlord. By keeping conversations and not noticing the things that he tells her makes her a very naïve girl. She is taking the risks of getting kidnapped or tortured and don’t even realize it. He is very confident and has no shame in what he does. Hi confidence with her is very high and he is liable to get his way with a girl like her. Julie should have been ended the conversation and should not have taken that last drink. Now the warlord is sure that she is going to be going home with him and there is no telling what his intentions are wit her. There is no telling what Julie did at the end of the story and she probably finally noticed what danger she was in and it was to late.

  69. Bryan S Says:

I really feel like Julie is an idiot. She shouldn’t have sex with this “warlord” because what does she really know about this guy? Absolutely nothing. I think she needs to get to know the dude better but hey some people take it anyway they can get it obviously. Julie should be turned off just because of the fact that this man says he kills people and also seems really aggressive for no reason. The girl really seems into the warlord though because shes sitting down having a great conversation. Warlord’s don’t care about anything at least that’s what I think. If a person can do things like this you clearly have no sympathy for anyone. The bottom line is this stupid girl Julie shouldn’t just give up the vagina like that.

I think Julie shouldn’t have sexual intercourse with the Warlord because he’s a killer for a living, he takes over a certain side of the country that cannot enforce laws. He bribe, Kidnap, Indoctrinate, toture, and kill people until the whole population of any region that falls above a certain threshold of natural resources but below a certain threshold of government protection. Him and his team members terrorize the area until the entire population is either dead or subdued.
Julie shouldnt have sexual intercourse with him because they met on a online dating website now-a-days your can’t trust online dating and meeting people online, its very dangerous.

  71. shahyid graham Says:

I think julie should not do it because she barley knows the guy. The online dating process can be very dangerous and she is drunk so it will be a big mistake. julie is an airhead all she wants is sex with a random guy and she can catch anything. Not to mention that he is a warlord so he could kill her or rape her. And the passage says nothing about how they have been talking so this could be her first time actually meeting him and i think it is . if she sleeps with him it will make Julie will feel horrible the next day knowing that she was nothing but a one night stand to a warlord that she will never see again in her life. “Shahyid Graham is a freshmen at Shaw University Studying Political Science .”

  72. Robyn Frazier-Bodrick Says:

This was a very interesting read. In my opinion, she should do it. I know I’m probably the only one that thinks so but look at all the reason why she should instead of the obvious reasons why she shouldn’t. She’s attracted to him. He’s actually a really nice guy. Plus they have a genuine connection. I’m sure he gets tired of doing what he’s doing. That’s why he takes breaks and online dates. He could rape her but he rapes plenty of women in the Congo. It’s possible that he wants that intimacy with a woman and he wants to be able to have a regular conversation with someone. Who knows? He might be a very passionate lover and how many people can say that they’ve had sex with a Warlord? Even if it is just a one night stand, it would be a once in a lifetime experience.

do I think that Julie should f**k the warlord? Yes I do, but I also feel that she should be prepared for the consequences that will come after whether it is good or bad. 74. LeQuentae Edmonds Says:

I don’t think she should do it because she just met him. He accually told her he was a warlord. His job involves murdering, raping, and terrorism. She is already a little tipsy. This man could take her home with him and try anything. She met him online which is not safe. He could not be the man she thinks is so charming. She should just carry her tipsy but home, or anywhere but his house.

  75. aldariusparker Says:

I think Julie should do it because of her flirtatiousness in the story towards the warlord. She knew what she was doing the whole time. And people say she was just tipsy which i agree, but she only had 3 cocktails. Even if she didnt drink i think Julie would still do it because thats just the type of person she is. Any other women would have told themselves before they even went on the date, I’m not going to drink tonight because i dont even know this guy. I know what alcohol do to my system and im smarter than that. I know what most guys want and thats just to get into every girl pants. I’m not going to fall into his trap with his words, tell me everything i want to hear. So my opinion to this is Julie knew what she was doing and where all this was leading to.

  76. Darius Walker Says:

No, Julie should not sleep with the warlord because this is their first time meeting with each other and she has gotten tipsy on this date. Also I think they shouldn’t because they do not seem to be a good couple from my point of the story. The warlord being an aggressive guy and he is probably a big guy for what he does. Julie sounds like she could be a sweet and innocent girl and wouldn’t be able to handle being in a relationship with a warlord. I think that the reason Julie is acting this way and is tipsy is because she is scared that she is on a blind date and that she just found out exactly who she is on a date with. She doesn’t want the fact that she is scared to show and she wants the night to be a blur when she should just tell him and leave if that’s the case.

Julie should not have sex with the warlord. The warlord is cold-hearted and doesn’t care about killing innocent people. Julie could be in a lot a danger being invovled witha man like him. Julie is not a foolish girl she is just intoxicated which is making her very naive. She ask the warlord very intelligent questions like she’s doing more to find out information, however it is every clear she wants to sleep with him. I think she knows that it’s wrong she just doesn’t care because he is so charming and cute. There could be a lot a negitve in sleeping with this man. Julie just meet him and this is the frist time sha has had physical contact with him. Sometimes what you want is not always good for what you need.

What an interesting story. Although I do not think Julie should have sex with the warlord, sometimes in life, we do what we have to do! Meaning, this story reminds me of the hot series, Scandal. Kerry Washington, one of the main characters, slept with the enemy – Jake. She had a short relationship with him that ended, but she chose to sleep with him when she definitely knew he was the enemy. He is just as corrupt as the warlord. He kills and steals at the blink of an eye. But, because Kerry wants to bring him and the C. I. A. top secret program called B316 down, she sleeps with him to gain information. Maybe that is the motive behind this little naive girl name Julie. You know, cops are good actresses.

However, there is a lot that we do not know about Julie. I love how this story leaves us wondering – why does she continue to talk with him instead of running for her life? Why does she continue to drink and flirt when the warlord clarifies that he is not a landlord, but a warlord and he provides a very vivid description of his career.

I think Should Julie should. She’s grown she knows what she getting herself into. It’s not like the Warlord is lying to her, but he’s putting everything out on the table. She knows what he does for a living and she thinks its “interesting”. Also her behavior during the date tells me she’s prepared to sleep with him. For example she’s touchy, she’s tipsy, and at the end of the story she asks him “are you okay to drive”. All the sign she going home with him or vice verse.
