Should She Do It?
Dr. Derrick A. Justice is an English teacher at Shaw University. He is trying innovative ways to get students engaged in reading critically and writing critically. To this end, he is using real-world readings and issues to see how students and professionals approach the task of responding critically and how they differ in their reasoning and analysis. Hopefully, this new approach will help students develop as writers and thinkers and be better prepared for the real world.
Please enjoy the experience of “Julie and the Warlord,” written by B.J. Novak in One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories. (Mr. Novak is a writer and actor, and he is a graduate of Harvard University with a degree in English and Spanish Literature.) It should only take about 15 minutes to read.
After you have responded to the question of whether Julie should “do it” in a blog, (i.e., YOU MUST READ AND ANSWER THE DISCUSSION QUESTION AT THE END OF THE STORY TO KNOW WHAT “DO IT” IS), please take the Poll: “Yes,” “No,” or “Not sure.”
That’s it. Remember: You will be in a cyber classroom with professionals and students from all over the country discussing this story with you.
